The Iraqi press reported that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki appointed his son Ahmed al-Maliki to a new position within the government. The younger Maliki will be the assistant to the director of the prime minister’s office. Previously, Ahmed was the head of procurement in that same office. The media said that while there, he built up a huge fortune, and invested in real estate in other countries. It’s also been said that Ahmed has influence over some government agencies due to his father. Since Iraq is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, nepotism and cronyism is rampant. It should be no surprise then, that Maliki, like other politicians, has placed friends and family in prime positions to take advantage of government largesse.
